Here’s a joke…

A Mexican bandit robbed a bank in Texas and got caught by the town’s sheriff.

When the sheriff tried to question him about the money, he realized that the robber didn’t speak English and the sheriff didn’t speak Spanish.

Fortunately, a bilingual lawyer was nearby and was summoned to help out with the situation.

The lawyer translated for the sheriff and said in Spanish: “Oye – the police is asking where is the money.

The bandit, of course, said that he had no idea what he was talking about.

When the lawyer translated back, the sheriff pulled out his gun and said “Tell him to tell me where he hid the money or I’ll blow his brains out. I mean it.”

When the lawyer translated the threat, the terrified bandit blurted out, in Spanish, that the loot was buried under the oak tree in back of the cantina.

“What did he say?” asked the sheriff.

The lawyer answered, “He said ‘Get lost, you stupid jerk. I’m not telling… and you’re not man enough to shoot me.'”

I’ve told that joke a few times when starting transcreation work for clients. When handling something as delicate as marketing communications, you need to make sure that your agency team is on your side, shares your priorities and is as committed as you are to gaining new clients and keeping the ones you have.
